In the Zhytomyr region, internally displaced persons (IDPs) have received keys to their new apartments in a modular town constructed with the support of the Ukrainian Red Cross

Today, a new modular town for internally displaced persons was officially opened in the Zhytomyr region, with the participation of Oleksii Kuleba, Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration of Ukraine – Minister for Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine; Serhiy Sukhomlyn, Head of the State Agency for Restoration and Development of Infrastructure of Ukraine; Vitaliy Bunechko, Head of the Zhytomyr Regional Military Administration; Rosario Maria Gianluca Valastro, President of the Italian Red Cross; and Maksym Dotsenko, Director General of the Ukrainian Red Cross.

The modular town consists of 56 houses and a shelter. Each 45 sq m house is designed to accommodate four people and features two bedrooms, a studio kitchen, and a separate bathroom. The homes are equipped with essential appliances, including boilers, air conditioners, and showers. Additionally, the town includes a shelter.

“Today, together with our partners, we are opening another modular town for people who have lost their homes while fleeing the war. The Ukrainian Red Cross team has made every effort to ensure that families stay comfortable in their new homes. The homes are equipped with everything necessary for daily life, and, of course, there is a shelter to guarantee the safety of all residents during air raids,” stated Maksym Dotsenko, Director General of the Ukrainian Red Cross.

“This is an important project aimed at supporting people. The task of the authorities today is to ensure decent conditions for those who have suffered from Russian aggression. We must scale up such initiatives. I am grateful to the families who, despite the difficulties, remain in Ukraine, work, and raise their children. We, for our part, will do everything to ensure they feel comfortable, and I am confident that the Zhytomyr region will become a true home. I thank our international partners for their help and support of our people,” stated Oleksii Kuleba, Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration of Ukraine – Minister for Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine.

“I would like to thank the Ukrainian Red Cross for making this project possible. The results have even exceeded our expectations: we initially planned for 40 houses, but thanks to the outstanding efforts of the teams, we have built 56. These are 16 families who are here with us today, receiving the keys to their new homes,” said Serhiy Sukhomlyn, Head of the State Agency for Restoration and Development of Infrastructure of Ukraine.

As part of this project, the Zhytomyr City Council provided land, constructed water supply and sewage networks, installed outdoor lighting, completed landscaping, set up power supply networks, and prepared the foundations.

“This project is a prime example of synergy, collaborative effort, and the long journey that has led to the 56 houses now standing in Zhytomyr. It demonstrates the success of our cooperation with the Italian and Ukrainian Red Crosses. We are deeply grateful for the ongoing support we receive from all of them,” said Vitaliy Bunechko, Head of the Zhytomyr Regional Military Administration.

“Today is a small ray of sunshine amidst the many difficult days for humanity. We wish a warm and peaceful stay to the 56 families who will face this cold winter in their new homes. It is symbolic to know that they will have the roof of the Red Cross above them. On behalf of the Italian Red Cross, we embrace you and express our heartfelt thanks for your cooperation and the work you have done,” said Rosario Maria Gianluca Valastro, President of the Italian Red Cross.
