Nearly 90,000 visits have been made by social helpers of the Ukrainian Red Cross
Social helpers from the Ukrainian Red Cross Home-Based Care programme provide vital support to elderly individuals across the country, assisting them with daily tasks and household chores. In September alone, they made almost 90,000 visits, delivering more than 719,000 services to elderly people living alone. Social helpers provide services such as cleaning, cooking, changing bed linen, and accompanying elderly people to medical appointments. They also assist with shopping for food, water, and other essential goods, pay utility bills on behalf of beneficiaries, and provide companionship through regular walks. Currently, the Ukrainian Red Cross employs 1,300 social helpers nationwide.
“In addition to their professional skills, our social helpers’ humanity and compassion are crucial to the assistance they provide. Beyond their core duties, many of our helpers form close bonds with those they care for, offering support in solving other life challenges and enriching their social lives. For most, this role is not just a job but an opportunity to demonstrate their best human qualities,” said Zoia Pogorila, Head of the Home-Based Care Unit of the Ukrainian Red Cross.
It is also worth noting that the Ukrainian Red Cross works closely with the Ministry of Social Policy of Ukraine. A Memorandum was recently signed to introduce new social services and further develop psychosocial support programmes for the population.
