The Ukrainian Red Cross conducted a training on International Humanitarian Law for representatives of the National Agency on Corruption Prevention (NACP)

The two-day event, held in Lviv, brought together the leadership of the regional and local branches of the Ukrainian Red Cross. The training was delivered by volunteer trainers specialising in international humanitarian law (IHL) from the Ukrainian Red Cross, alongside staff from the Compliance Unit of the National Committee.

During the training, participants were introduced to the history and development of IHL, which applies during armed conflicts. They also studied its key provisions and norms, designed to protect victims of war and regulate the means and methods of warfare. Particular emphasis was placed on the principles of distinction between combatants and civilians, proportionality, and the limitations on the use of force. Participants learned about international accountability mechanisms for IHL violations, including the role of courts and tribunals.

An important part of the programme was a presentation on the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, covering its structure, emblems, and fundamental principles. Participants were also familiarised with the work of the Ukrainian Red Cross and the measures taken to safeguard the Red Cross emblem from misuse. The module on “Risks, Fraud, Corruption and Cybersecurity: A Unified Integrity Strategy” proved especially valuable for attendees.

Conducting such joint events is a crucial and timely initiative, providing practical training and enhancing government officials’ knowledge of international humanitarian law. The Ukrainian Red Cross continues to promote understanding of IHL and supports the state in its implementation.
