Active ageing clubs

ACTIVE AGEING CLUBS

Active Ageing Clubs are spaces where older adults can participate in activities, connect with like-minded people, develop valuable skills, and take care of their health.

The core principle of the clubs is to provide opportunities for physical activity, social integration, learning and personal development, mental health support, and to create an inclusive environment where every participant feels valued and part of the community.

Moreover, members of the Active Ageing Clubs actively engage in community life and contribute to the development of the clubs themselves. Being part of such a community is not just about receiving care, but also about mutual support. As a result, volunteers and staff of the Ukrainian Red Cross often build lasting friendships with participants.

The first Active Ageing Clubs were established by the Ukrainian Red Cross in 2018 in the Luhansk and Donetsk regions. However, due to safety concerns, activities were suspended following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Nonetheless, the experience gained in these regions has played a crucial role in restoring and expanding the clubs’ activities elsewhere in Ukraine.

Older people continued to need social connections and support. Therefore, in 2023, the Ukrainian Red Cross, together with partners — including national Red Cross societies from other countries — resumed the clubs’ activities. Collaboration with local authorities remains a vital part of this work. Today, among club members are those who have relocated from other regions to safer areas.

Become a Volunteer with the Ukrainian Red Cross Active Ageing Clubs

Currently, 132 Active Ageing Clubs have been opened in almost all regions of Ukraine, except for Luhansk, Crimea, and Kyiv. Anyone aged 60 or older can become a member. Members join in organizing, conducting, and participating in activities.

Members of Active Ageing Clubs are representatives of local communities. Some are volunteer activists who lead their own groups of regular participants. They build friendly, supportive environments, organise activities, inspire others, and encourage like-minded people to get involved.

Being there for older people isn’t just about care — it’s about mutual support.

As a volunteer, you help create spaces where older adults are not isolated, but instead can socialise, stay active, and live with dignity. Your time and presence help them feel connected, valued, and involved in community life.

How Volunteers Contribute:

  • Lead or assist with masterclasses, games, physical activities, reading sessions, or conversations
  • Help organise events, regular sessions, and support logistics
  • Simply by being present — listening, offering companionship, and sharing time together

  • Anyone interested in contributing to their community through meaningful social initiatives
  • Professionals from a wide range of fields — from psychologists to craftspeople — who are willing to share their skills and experience
