Raising Awareness About Mine Risks in the Sumy Region

The Sumy region remains one of the areas in Ukraine under daily threat of shelling. As soon as the explosions stop, it’s not only emergency services that rush to the scene — the Ukrainian Red Cross mine risk awareness team also gets to work immediately.

Their mission is to inform local residents promptly about the dangers that remain after attacks: fragments, unexploded ordnance, and explosive items that may resemble an ordinary piece of metal or debris from household appliances.

Everyone should be aware: the remnants of an attack can be just as dangerous as the attack itself. That’s why we reach out to people — near their homes, in the yards, by shops, or on children’s playgrounds — to raise awareness and help keep communities safe.

Key safety reminders:

  • Return home with caution and stay alert
  • Do not touch suspicious objects
  • Teach children and older adults basic safety rules
  • Follow official instructions and report any findings immediately by calling 101, 102, or 112

“We don’t wait — we act immediately after an attack to prevent anyone from being harmed by what goes unnoticed,” say the Ukrainian Red Cross mine risk awareness specialists.

We stand by those in need!
