SYLA Project Kicks Off to Strengthen Community Preparedness

Partners of the #SYLA project came together in Kyiv to launch a joint initiative aimed at helping Ukrainian communities better prepare for and respond to emergencies. Over two days, representatives aligned their visions, mapped out next steps, and laid the groundwork for stronger local disaster preparedness.

The SYLA project, funded by the European Union, unites the efforts of the Ukrainian Red Cross, ACTED, IMPACT, the German Red Cross, and the Danish Red Cross. It aims to strengthen community capacity in disaster preparedness and early response.

During the two-day workshop, the partners:

  • Developed a shared vision of the project’s goals, expected outcomes, action plans, and implementation methodology.
  • Agreed on roles, coordination mechanisms, and the responsibilities of all participants.
  • Discussed key operational areas, including reporting, financial management, logistics, procurement, security, accountability, and fraud prevention.
  • Emphasised the importance of incorporating local knowledge, community engagement, and support at every stage of the project.
  • Reviewed visibility and communication tools in line with project requirements.

When disaster strikes, local responders are the first on the scene. The Ukrainian Red Cross and SYLA partners work hand in hand with them to help communities save lives, prepare for emergencies, and recover swiftly to return to normal life.
