First Aid – Saving Lives Before the Ambulance Arrives

Knowing how to provide first aid is essential — it’s a skill that can save lives at the most unexpected moments. A recent incident during a physical education class in the Poltava region proved just how critical it can be. When a teenager suddenly collapsed after running and his heart stopped, it was the teachers and students trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) who fought for his life before the ambulance arrived.

Every minute of delay in responding to cardiac arrest significantly reduces the chance of survival. That’s why everyone, regardless of age or profession, should learn the basics of first aid. It’s not just a valuable skill, but a civic responsibility. By learning how to save others, we help build a safer, more resilient society — especially in times of war.

The Ukrainian Red Cross is committed to teaching people how to save lives. Trainings, seminars, and first aid workshops are held across Ukraine, empowering individuals with the knowledge and skills to act effectively in health emergencies. Since 2022, more than 308,000 people have completed first aid training with the Ukrainian Red Cross.

Get involved — first aid knowledge saves lives.
