In Dnipro, repairs to a shelter in a multi-storey building have been completed

Last week, the renovation of a shelter in a multi-storey residential building in Dnipro was successfully completed. The project, which ran from March to April 2025, was carried out in collaboration with the Dnipro regional branch of the Ukrainian Red Cross and with the support of the British Red Cross.

“Thanks to the support of our international partners and the joint efforts of the community, we have successfully transformed the old shelter into a modern space, ready to offer protection in times of danger. We are deeply grateful to everyone who contributed to this project. In moments like these, having a safe place to stay is absolutely vital,” said Liudmyla Lashko, Head of the Dnipro regional branch of the Ukrainian Red Cross.

The scope of the project included:

  • Interior finishing works on the walls, floors, and ceilings
  • Installation of a new WC, with full replacement of plumbing systems
  • Installation of a water filtration system with a backup supply
  • Ventilation system installation
  • Modernisation of electrical grids and installation of a backup power supply
  • Purchase of furniture for the space
  • Repairs to two entrances and stairwells adjacent to the shelter
  • Installation of a modern video surveillance system

“We all understand that this street has been one of the hardest hit by enemy attacks. That’s why we responded promptly to the residents’ request to repair their basement, which serves as a shelter during air raids. On this occasion, the Ukrainian Red Cross supported us by facilitating the allocation of donor funds for the repairs. The British Red Cross funded the entire project to ensure the residents had a safe place to stay. The result is a secure and comfortable environment for everyone living in the building. Overall, this is a strong example of effective cooperation between the city and international organisations. We are confident that this partnership will continue,” said Oleksandr Sanzhara, Secretary of the Dnipro City Council.

This project is part of the Ukrainian Red Cross’s recovery efforts. In 2023-2024, with the support of partners and international donors, the Ukrainian Red Cross successfully implemented over 50 projects to repair shelters, restore housing infrastructure, and create safe spaces for communities. Major and routine repairs were carried out in residential buildings and public shelters across Kyiv, Kharkiv, Mykolaiv, Poltava, Cherkasy, Kropyvnytskyi, Sumy, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions.

The implementation of these reconstruction projects contributes to the long-term security and resilience of communities affected by the war. The activities of the Ukrainian Red Cross in this area serve as an example of effective cooperation between Ukrainian communities, state institutions, and humanitarian partners.
