The Ukrainian Red Cross held an information session to mark the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action
Today, Ukraine is one of the most heavily mined countries in the world. Mines and explosive devices are not only present in de-occupied territories but also pose a threat across the entire country, as missile fragments and UAV wreckage can be found throughout Ukraine. Another significant challenge is that it will take decades to clear all explosive devices and fully demine the country. As such, the risk posed by mines remains an urgent issue for Ukrainians.
The Ukrainian Red Cross is working to raise awareness and inform as many people as possible about the dangers posed by mines and other explosive devices. Most accidents occur due to a lack of knowledge — people may not even realise that an object is dangerous, or they may simply be unaware of the correct safety measures to avoid injury.
Ahead of the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, observed on 4 April, the Humanitarian Access and Protection Department of the Ukrainian Red Cross held an information session to raise awareness about the risks of explosive hazards and the importance of safe behaviour.
Representatives from the National Police of Ukraine and the Trinity Hub NGO joined the event. Law enforcement officials spoke about preventing uncontrolled arms trafficking and shared rules of behaviour that can help avoid tragedies. The management of the Trinity Hub shared the centre’s experience in supporting and rehabilitating people affected by explosive ordnance. Their expertise is invaluable for developing a comprehensive approach to rehabilitation and assistance.
All participants were provided with key information on how to respond if they encounter suspicious objects.
Remember: attentiveness, awareness, and caution are key to your safety. Each of us can save lives — our own and those of others.
