Nearly 270,000 people have completed first aid training provided by the Ukrainian Red Cross
Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Ukrainian Red Cross first aid instructors have been conducting training sessions almost daily across Ukraine, teaching essential life-saving skills. As of 1 September 2024, nearly 270,000 individuals have completed this training.
“The Ukrainian Red Cross offers three certified programmes and employs a highly skilled teaching staff. Our trainers work in the most remote towns and villages and in cities under constant shelling. One of our priorities is adapting training for people with disabilities and those with visual and hearing impairments so that everyone can learn how to provide first aid,” emphasised Nadiia Yamnenko, Head of the First Aid Unit at the Ukrainian Red Cross.
Currently, we offer 6-hour, 12-hour, and 48-hour training programmes. These programmes consist of various modules and allocate 60% of the time to practical first-aid skills, including:
- performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR);
- stopping bleeding (applying bandages and tourniquets);
- treating burns and wounds, among other skills.
It is worth noting that training sessions today are attended by the general public and employees from the State Emergency Service (SES), the National Police of Ukraine, and Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia). Additionally, many government agencies and businesses are now organising similar training for their staff. In the current situation, it is crucial for everyone to understand the procedures that can save lives during shelling, emergencies, and accidents, including those that occur in everyday life.
At the same time, Ukrainian Red Cross trainers are conducting training for children aged 5 and above, using their own methodology and educational materials. Since 2023, our trainers have also conducted training sessions for pet owners on delivering first-aid care for their pets.
