The Ukrainian Red Cross Announces a Competition for the Best Design of Emergency Response Team Chevron

A competition for the design of the chevron for the Ukrainian Red Cross Society’s emergency response teams will be held from April 24 to May 15.

The competition aims to select the best design for the chevron, which will help identify volunteers as members of emergency response teams and promote a unified visual perception of volunteers in this area across the country.

The competition is open to all interested individuals.

Participation in the competition is free of charge.

The criteria for selecting the designs submitted to the competition are as follows:

  • Compliance with the principles of phaleristics and heraldry, as well as the requirements specified below.
  • Originality.

Requirements for the design:

  • Compliance with the principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
  • Depiction of the symbols of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, emblem, or logo of the Ukrainian Red Cross Society.
  • Compliance with the principles of heraldry.

Additional Requirements:

  • The design of the chevron must not replicate the chevrons of various Ukrainian services, existing state or administrative bodies, etc.
  • The chevron must have a fastener for shoulder wear.
  • The diameter of the chevron in full size must not exceed 9 centimetres.

The Commission does not consider designs that:

  • are submitted after the deadline;
  • do not meet the terms of the competition.

Materials for the competition can be submitted by post or by email. Designs marked ‘Design for the Chevron Competition’ can be sent until May 15, 2024, to the email address national@redcross.org.ua or to the postal address of the Ukrainian Red Cross Society at 30 Yevhena Chykalenka St., Kyiv, 01024.

If the materials are sent by post, the participant must include the following:

  • An application stating information about the author(s) of the design, as well as a statement confirming that the designs submitted to the competition do not violate the intellectual property rights of third parties.
  • A graphic colour image of the chevron in full size and enlarged size (up to 150 millimetres in height) on a sheet of A4 paper.
  • Raster images (in JPEG format, resolution not less than 400 dpi) and vector images (in EPS, AI, or CDR format) of the chevron.
  • An explanatory note (in MS Word format, extension DOC or RTF, version 97 and later) up to one page in length, explaining the colours, images, and inscriptions of the design, recorded on an electronic storage device.
  • A reference containing the surname, name, patronymic, address of the author(s), and contact phone numbers.

If the materials are sent by email, the participant must include the following:

  • An application stating information about the author(s) of the design, as well as a statement confirming that the designs submitted to the competition do not violate the intellectual property rights of third parties (in MS Word format, extension DOC or RTF, version 97 and later).
  • A graphic colour image of the chevron in full size and enlarged size (up to 150 millimetres in height) on a sheet of A4 paper (in PDF format).
  • Files of raster images (in JPEG format, resolution not less than 400 dpi) and vector images (in EPS, AI format) of the chevron.
  • An explanatory note up to one page in length, explaining the colours, images, and inscriptions of the design (in MS Word format, extension DOC or RTF, version 97 and later).
  • A text file containing the following information: surname, name, patronymic, address of the author(s), and contact phone numbers (in MS Word format, extension DOC or RTF, version 97 and later).

The use and processing of personal data are carried out in accordance with the requirements of the Law of Ukraine ‘On Personal Data Protection’.

The original designs submitted to the competition, along with supporting materials, will not be returned to the authors.

Information regarding the results of the competition will be posted on the official website of the Ukrainian Red Cross Society after the winners are determined.

The winners will be selected by the established Competition Commission, chaired by the President of the Ukrainian Red Cross Society. Decisions of the Commission are reached by a simple majority vote of its members present at the committee meeting. If there is an equal distribution of votes, the Chairman of the Commission casts the deciding vote.

The Commission will determine the winners of the competition by selecting the top three designs:

  • The design chosen for first place will be used as the official chevron for the Ukrainian Red Cross Society’s emergency response teams.
  • Participants who place first, second, and third will receive an acknowledgement from the President of the Ukrainian Red Cross Society.

Additionally, the Commission may invite participants to collaborate on finalising the selected designs.
