In Zakarpattia, a Social Assistant Cares for Lonely Individuals: The Story of Mariia

Mariia has led a challenging life, dedicated to her family. However, she now finds herself nearly alone. Last year, Mariia lost her husband, who had been her companion and supporter throughout their 40 years of marriage. Currently, her only remaining close relative is her brother, with whom she strives to maintain contact.

The woman has health problems that make living alone difficult, as everyday tasks such as cleaning and cooking become a challenge and even a test for Mariia. Fortunately, she has a supportive friend, Nataliia, who works as a social assistant with the Ukrainian Red Cross. Nataliia assists Mariia by helping with household chores, preparing meals, delivering groceries and medications, offering emotional support, arranging visits to the family doctor, and more. Nataliia is dedicated to ensuring that her clients don’t face the challenges of old age alone, providing them with opportunities to share their emotions and receive the support and care they need.

Currently, Nataliia is taking care of 5 clients in the Zakarpattia region.

Overall, the Ukrainian Red Cross Home-Based Care activity covers 28 settlements in the region, with 26 social assistants helping 160 lonely people daily.
