The Ukrainian Red Cross delivers international humanitarian law training for police officers in Kyiv region

A two-day training course on international humanitarian law (IHL), organised by the Ukrainian Red Cross for representatives of the Education Security Service of the Kyiv Region Police, took place in Kyiv. Participants included staff members and inspectors from units in the Boryspil, Fastiv, Obukhiv, Bila Tserkva, Brovary, Bucha and Vyshhorod districts. The training was delivered by senior specialists from the Ukrainian Red Cross IHL Unit.

For police officers who work with children and help ensure safety in educational institutions, it is important to understand how international humanitarian law protects civilians during armed conflict. Knowledge of these rules helps them understand the protection afforded to people who are not, or are no longer, taking part in hostilities, as well as the rules governing the conduct of hostilities.

During the training, participants reviewed the main rules of IHL, including the principles of distinction, proportionality and precautions in attack. Particular attention was paid to the protection of civilians during armed conflict.

Participants also learned about the structure and Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, the activities of the Ukrainian Red Cross, and the rules governing the use and legal protection of the Red Cross, Red Crescent and Red Crystal emblems.

Following the training, participants discussed opportunities for further cooperation, including developing IHL training programmes for police officers that reflect the specific nature of their duties, as well as organising specialised training courses and joint seminars.

The Ukrainian Red Cross continues to cooperate with government institutions, including by promoting knowledge of international humanitarian law among professionals whose work involves ensuring safety and protecting people.
