The Ukrainian Red Cross took part in a meeting of the permanent working group on the establishment and operation of volunteer and local fire brigades, chaired by Volodymyr Demchuk, Deputy Head of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SESU).
The Ukrainian Red Cross is contributing to the development of the volunteer firefighting movement in Ukraine and supporting communities in strengthening their preparedness for emergencies.
During the meeting, Alesia Pochtarenko, Head of the Civil Protection Unit at the Ukrainian Red Cross, presented projects and initiatives being implemented to support community-based volunteer fire brigades. In particular, she highlighted efforts to provide teams with equipment and protective gear, as well as the delivery of fire safety training. The Ukrainian Red Cross also presented its work on the development of an online learning platform for volunteer firefighters, which will enable participants to complete standardised theoretical training remotely, followed by practical skills training at SESU training units.
Participants also discussed measures to attract new volunteers, including young people, women and veterans.
The development of volunteer and local fire brigades is an important component of strengthening community safety and enhancing preparedness for emergencies. The Ukrainian Red Cross continues to work alongside the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, local authorities and international partners to strengthen community capacities and resilience.
