Students in Bila Tserkva Studied International Humanitarian Law

In June, the Ukrainian Red Cross, in cooperation with the Kyiv Regional Institute of Postgraduate Education for Pedagogical Staff, conducted four training sessions on international humanitarian law (IHL). Participants included students from Bila Tserkva Humanitarian and Pedagogical Professional College. The sessions were led by Anna Tishchenko, an IHL volunteer trainer with the Ukrainian Red Cross and Head of the General Secondary Education Department at the Kyiv Regional Institute of Postgraduate Education for Pedagogical Staff.

During the training, participants:

  • learned about the fundamentals of IHL, its scope of application, and its key principles;
  • analysed practical legal scenarios and learned to distinguish lawful actions from violations of IHL, including war crimes;
  • examined the rules for the protection of civilians and civilian objects during armed conflict;
  • strengthened critical thinking, argumentation, and teamwork skills — all essential for future educators.

All four training sessions were conducted in an interactive format, encouraging active participation, practical case analysis, and teamwork.

Training future educators is of particular importance to the Ukrainian Red Cross. The knowledge gained will help them clearly and accurately explain to students the rules applicable during armed conflict and contribute to fostering respect for human dignity and humanitarian values.
