Teachers in Ivano-Frankivsk region are trained in international humanitarian law

As part of in-service teacher training in the Ivano-Frankivsk region, the Ukrainian Red Cross conducted a series of workshops on international humanitarian law (IHL). Participants included teachers of foreign languages, history, law, civic education, as well as integrated courses in civic and historical studies.

The training sessions were delivered by Ukrainian Red Cross IHL volunteer trainers: Khrystyna Duda, a lecturer at the Department of Theory and Methodology of Teaching at the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Institute of Postgraduate Pedagogical Education, and volunteer trainer Maksym Kovaliuk.

During the sessions, educators were introduced to the key norms and principles of international humanitarian law, including the principles of humanity, distinction, military necessity, and proportionality. Participants analysed practical case studies related to the protection of civilians in armed conflict and worked through complex moral and legal dilemmas that may arise in wartime.

Special attention was given to the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, its fundamental principles, and its role in protecting the lives, health, and dignity of people affected by armed conflict.

Through discussions and group work, participants explored ways to foster a culture of humanity, respect for human dignity, and responsible engagement with today’s social challenges.

These sessions once again highlighted the important role of educators in promoting knowledge of international humanitarian law and humanitarian values. Education plays a key role in building understanding of human rights, responsibility, and humanity, even in the most difficult circumstances.
