As part of the SYLA project, the Ukrainian Red Cross is strengthening community preparedness for emergency response
Community safety largely depends on those who are first to provide assistance. That is why, under the SYLA project, the Ukrainian Red Cross conducted a series of training sessions for volunteer fire brigades, representatives of local authorities, and staff members across different regions.
The Ukrainian Red Cross organised 28 regional training sessions, bringing together participants from various communities to strengthen knowledge, coordination, and readiness to respond to emergencies. The training covered 25 volunteer fire brigades that work daily to ensure the safety of people in their communities.
As part of the training programme:
- 176 participants completed 12 two-day first aid training sessions;
- 150 participants attended 8 sessions on psychological first aid;
- 204 participants took part in 8 sessions on mine risk awareness and safe behaviour in areas contaminated by explosive ordnance.
In addition to developing practical skills, participants had the opportunity to share experiences, discuss local challenges, and strengthen collaboration between services and communities.
The project is implemented by the Ukrainian Red Cross in partnership with the Danish Red Cross, the German Red Cross, ACTED, and IMPACT, with financial support from the European Union. It aims to strengthen community capacity for emergency preparedness and early response.
