The Ukrainian Red Cross Joins Global Initiative to Promote International Humanitarian Law
The Ukrainian Red Cross has joined a global initiative aimed at galvanising political commitment to international humanitarian law (IHL) and strengthening compliance with its principles.
In this context, a meeting was held with representatives of government bodies, law enforcement agencies, and the International Committee of the Red Cross, with the participation of the Ukrainian Red Cross. The discussion focused on ways to reinforce respect for IHL, both in Ukraine and globally — a crucial issue, particularly in times of war, when these norms are too often disregarded.
Maksym Dotsenko, Director General of the Ukrainian Red Cross, stated in his address:
“The Global Initiative, launched in 2024, is founded on a simple but vital principle: without strong political will, compliance with international humanitarian law is impossible. Ukraine has already demonstrated its readiness to make IHL a political priority, and we are proud to be part of this process. The Ukrainian Red Cross remains a reliable partner of the state in advancing the implementation of international humanitarian law.”
Iryna Vereshchuk, Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, emphasised:
“Let’s be clear: the international community does not take international humanitarian law seriously enough. Global political elites are not applying sufficient political will to ensure compliance with IHL. That is why the Global Initiative to galvanise political commitment to international humanitarian law is both timely and necessary.”
The initiative has already been joined by 70 countries. Ukraine brings unique experience in implementing IHL during wartime — from preventing violations to protecting those not involved in hostilities. Our country stands ready to share this experience with the international community.
