“Through my example, I show that it’s never too late to start from scratch” — Yuliia, a participant in the Ukrainian Red Cross “Reboot: Expanding Employment Opportunities” programme

A year ago, Yuliia and her family left their hometown of Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region due to the full-scale war. Moving to Cherkasy was a major challenge for her — but it also opened up new opportunities.

Since childhood, Yuliia has enjoyed experimenting with spices, creating unique blends to enhance the flavour of her dishes. One day, while browsing social media, she came across the Reboot programme, implemented by the Ukrainian Red Cross with support from the Spanish Red Cross. The initiative helps internally displaced persons start their own businesses. Without hesitation, Yuliia developed a business plan and applied it.

After successfully completing all the stages, Yuliia received a microgrant. She used the funds to rent premises, purchase raw materials, and acquire the necessary equipment. This is how Pepper & Chili was born — a shop selling craft spices and original seasonings.

Thanks to its natural ingredients and unique flavours, the products quickly gained the trust of local residents. Yuliia not only secured a stable income for her family but also found a business that brings her joy.
Today, she continues to grow her business and supports others who, like her, had to start from scratch. Her story is one of strength, self-belief, and new horizons — even in the most difficult times.
