Blood Donation

BLOOD DONATION

Just 30 minutes of your time can save the lives of three people!

The Ukrainian Red Cross supports the state in promoting the donor movement and encourages people to donate blood and its components.

As part of its efforts to promote blood donation, the Ukrainian Red Cross:

  • distributes informational materials about the benefits and process of blood donation, including recommendations for before, during, and after donating;
  • organises donor drives in cooperation with local blood service centres and supports other initiatives to encourage blood donation;
  • fosters blood donation among Ukrainian Red Cross staff and volunteers;
  • engages and motivates community members to become blood donors;
  • provides ongoing support and assistance to blood donors.

To identify blood donation needs, the Ukrainian Red Cross works closely with regional blood service centres and their community branches, district transfusion units, medical institutions, and other partners. To promote the donor movement and attract new donors, the Ukrainian Red Cross organises thematic events, distributes informational materials on blood donation, motivates people to give blood, and provides comprehensive support to honorary blood donors.

Who can be saved by your blood?

  • A hospital patient undergoing planned surgery
  • A person receiving cancer treatment
  • A pregnant woman experiencing a complicated labour
  • A victim of an emergency, including those affected by war

Blood donation in times of war

Since the first days of the full-scale war in Ukraine, the Ukrainian Red Cross has been supporting regional blood service centres in organising blood drives and mobilising donors in response to the growing number of casualties. Awareness campaigns and donor engagement events continue to be held across the country to promote voluntary blood donation and strengthen the national donor movement. All donated blood and its components are provided to medical institutions and used to help save the lives of those in critical need.

You can donate blood or its components by visiting your nearest blood service centre. You may also join the Ukrainian Red Cross team and participate in blood donation initiatives.

You can become a blood donor if you meet the following criteria:

  • You weigh more than 50 kg.
  • You are at least 18 years old and under 60.
  • You are in good health, free from illness, and have no medical contraindications to blood donation.

You should also have a genuine willingness to become a donor and help save lives.
