Training sessions on the Fundamentals of International Humanitarian Law and Protection of the Red Cross Emblem were held in the Lviv region
Specialists from the International Humanitarian Law Unit of the National Committee of the Ukrainian Red Cross Society conducted a series of monitoring visits and training sessions focused on the “Fundamentals of International Humanitarian Law. Protection and Use of the Red Cross Emblem.”
During the visits, project coordinators travelled to three Ukrainian cities: Chervonohrad (17 September 2024), Sambir (18 September 2024), and Yavoriv (19 September 2024). Participants in the information and training events included Ukrainian Red Cross staff, volunteers, and young people from local youth centres.
The programme of the event included training sessions on the following topics:
- Protection and Use of the Red Cross Emblem: This session covered the history of the emblem, its appropriate use, violations, and the liabilities associated with such violations.
- Fundamentals of International Humanitarian Law (IHL): Participants learned about the basic concepts, system, principles, and norms of IHL. The session also addressed the categories of persons and objects protected under IHL and the responsibilities for non-compliance with its rules.
These information and training events aim to raise citizens’ awareness about the proper use of Red Cross symbols and the importance of respecting them. They also contribute to disseminating knowledge about international humanitarian law, particularly among young people. The event was held within the framework of the project “Civil Society Promoting Resilience in Ukraine” (PSPU) with the support of the Danish Red Cross.
