A two-day international humanitarian law training was held for representatives of the National Agency on Corruption Prevention
The Ukrainian Red Cross conducted a two-day training on international humanitarian law (IHL) for representatives of the National Agency on Corruption Prevention. The training aimed to strengthen participants’ understanding of the theoretical foundations of IHL, enhance their legal and civic competencies, and develop practical skills for integrating IHL norms into their professional activities.
Participants explored the content and application of IHL principles during hostilities aimed at protecting civilians, examined the consequences of violating the prohibition on direct participation of civilians in hostilities, and discussed responsibility for violations of IHL norms. They also learned about the importance of IHL as a legal mechanism for limiting violence during armed conflict and became familiar with the structure, emblems, and principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
The training was delivered by Ukrainian Red Cross volunteer trainers: Khrystyna Duda, lecturer at the Department of Theory and Methodology of Teaching at the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Institute of Postgraduate Pedagogical Education; Anna Tishchenko, Head of the General Secondary Education Department at the Kyiv Regional Institute of Postgraduate Teacher Education; and volunteer Maksym Kovaliuk.
During the training, participants worked with case studies, solved legal scenarios, and analysed practical situations, gaining deeper insight into the application of IHL principles during hostilities for the protection of civilians and civilian objects. They also learned about the functions of the Red Cross emblem, the meaning of emblems and protective signs, and the work of humanitarian organisations during armed conflict.
The Ukrainian Red Cross training contributed not only to increasing participants’ awareness, but also to developing approaches for further cooperation.
