The French Red Cross supports Ukraine not only through humanitarian aid but also by investing in the long-term development of communities

One example is the Zhytomyr region, where, in collaboration with the Ukrainian Red Cross, local initiatives are growing into sustainable social projects.

Recently, a delegation from the French Red Cross visited the region as part of the REDpreneur Ukraine programme. Together with the Ukrainian Red Cross team, they saw how community ideas are already being transformed into services that address people’s real needs.

  • In Korosten, work is underway to launch ‘RedCross Kids Camp’ — a day camp for children and teenagers. In the current circumstances, this is not just a place for leisure, but a safe space for development, support, and learning vital skills, including first aid.
  • In Zviahel, the focus is on social entrepreneurship. The ‘Touch of Care’ project is a social massage studio that will combine wellness services with opportunities to support those in need. The initiative is being implemented in close collaboration with local authorities and social services.
  • Ruzhyn demonstrates another area of development — local production. The ‘Dream Workshop’ involves sewing bed linen and creating new jobs within the community. It offers people the chance to stay, work, and grow within their own region.

Alongside these new initiatives, established services — such as resilience centres, social laundries, and clothing banks — continue to provide daily support to the community while laying the foundations for further change.

This experience shows that community development is possible even in difficult times. When there is a shared goal, local initiative, and reliable partnership support, ideas become reality and positive changes are felt by everyone.

The REDpreneurUA initiative is implemented by the Ukrainian Red Cross in partnership with the French Red Cross and the Austrian Red Cross.
