On World Health Day, the Ukrainian Red Cross highlights the importance of taking care of one’s health
During the war, access to healthcare for thousands of Ukrainians remains a critical issue. The destruction of infrastructure, limited access to medical facilities, ongoing stress, and the added burden of supporting older adults and people with disabilities due to the forced departure of their relatives are just some of the challenges faced by citizens.
”We value every life. Every day, we do everything in our power to strengthen the efforts of government agencies in delivering primary healthcare and social services that ensure a dignified life for all Ukrainians,” says Maksym Dotsenko, Director General of the Ukrainian Red Cross.
Main Activities of the Health Department of the Ukrainian Red Cross:
- Mobile Health Units (MHU)
The 83 mobile health units of the Ukrainian Red Cross operate across 23 regions of Ukraine. Since the onset of the full-scale war, they have provided nearly 1,275,000 medical services. The teams, which consist of family doctors, nurses, and drivers, visit communities with limited access to healthcare services. They provide:
- Medical consultations
- Primary health check-ups
- Measurement of basic health indicators
- Distribution of over-the-counter medicines (based on a specified list)
- Referrals to specialised medical professionals
The schedules of visits are coordinated with Primary Health Care Centres and take into account the needs of the communities. Special attention is given to the children’s MHU in the Rivne region and the multidisciplinary unit in the Odesa region, which focuses on rehabilitation and psychosocial support for children with special needs.
- Home-Based Care
1,330 social helpers provide support to 7,836 elderly individuals and people with disabilities across 23 regions of Ukraine and the city of Kyiv. They assist with personal hygiene, purchase groceries and medicines, perform household tasks, and accompany beneficiaries to medical appointments.
In addition, the Ukrainian Red Cross is actively developing Active Longevity Clubs, which provide older people with opportunities to engage in meaningful activities, connect with like-minded individuals, and feel safe and supported.
- Health Promotion and Disease Prevention
The goal of this initiative is to foster family health traditions and raise public awareness of:
- Disease prevention
- Healthy lifestyles
- The importance of vaccination
- Blood donation
More than 3,149 events have been held since the beginning of the year. Health consultants and volunteers organise individual consultations, group meetings, and practical sessions for the community.
- Advocacy for Nursing Development
The Ukrainian Red Cross, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, is advocating for nursing reform, including the development of new professional standards aligned with European norms. Currently, the process of developing and finalising six draft professional standards for nursing is underway. These standards will be adopted by all medical institutions across Ukraine and will form the basis for revising educational programmes at every level of education.
Together, we can build a healthier nation!
The Ukrainian Red Cross continues to support those most in need, expanding healthcare and social services even under the most difficult circumstances. With the support of international partners and volunteers, we work together to safeguard the health and well-being of Ukrainians.
