Veterans in Lviv Begin Home Adaptations with Ukrainian Red Cross Support

In Lviv, the first participants in a home adaptation programme for veterans with Group I or II disabilities resulting from the war have received funding and begun renovation work in their homes.

The programme has been jointly implemented by the Ukrainian Red Cross and the Lviv City Council since March 2026. It aims to help veterans adapt their homes to their individual needs, making them more accessible and suitable for independent living.

The Ukrainian Red Cross has received information from the Lviv City Council on six programme participants. Five have already received partial funding from the Ukrainian Red Cross, totalling UAH 964,154. Funding for the sixth participant is being prepared.

The programme operates on a co-financing basis. The Ukrainian Red Cross covers 50% of the cost of the works, while the Lviv City Council covers the remaining 50% after the works are completed. The maximum compensation for adapting one home is UAH 400,000.

Funding can be used for adaptations based on each participant’s needs, including installing a level-access shower, widening doorways, removing thresholds, adapting kitchens, relocating electrical sockets and making other modifications.

“It is important for us that the programme is already working in practice: the first veterans have received funding and started their renovations. This is an example of cooperation with the local community, where the city identifies needs and supports programme participants, while the Ukrainian Red Cross contributes funding. The next step is to see the results of the first renovations and assess further demand from veterans,” said Illya Kletskovskyy, Director General of the Ukrainian Red Cross.

The programme is aimed at veterans with Group I or II disabilities resulting from the war. The adaptations are tailored to each participant’s individual needs, helping make their homes more accessible and suitable for everyday life.

The Ukrainian Red Cross continues to cooperate with the Lviv City Council under the programme and will monitor the results of the first completed home adaptations.
