The Ukrainian Red Cross strengthens community preparedness for emergencies
In August, specialists from the Kharkiv regional branch of the Ukrainian Red Cross conducted two DPAS training sessions on disaster preparedness in the village of Starovirivka, Berestyn district.
The training was attended by staff from the Starovirivka Village Council and Starovirivka Lyceum.
The sessions were held as part of the SYLA project, which aims to strengthen communities’ capacity to prepare for and effectively respond to emergencies.
During the training, participants:
- analysed potential threats and vulnerabilities within their institutions;
- identified available resources and needs to improve safety and preparedness;
- practised emergency notification procedures and evacuation arrangements;
- assigned roles and responsibilities among staff;
- identified the material and technical resources required;
- practised the sequence of actions to take in the event of an emergency.
Such training helps institutions not only assess their level of preparedness, but also develop clear procedures for responding to emergencies — procedures that can be critical when a crisis occurs.
The SYLA project is implemented by the Ukrainian Red Cross in partnership with the Danish Red Cross, the German Red Cross, ACTED and IMPACT, with financial support from the European Union.
We are strengthening community preparedness so that, when a critical situation arises, knowledge can translate into clear and coordinated action.
