143 Active Longevity Clubs of the Ukrainian Red Cross operate across Ukraine
Active Longevity Clubs of the Ukrainian Red Cross are spaces where older people can take part in activities, make new friends, develop useful skills, and take care of their health.
As a result of the full-scale invasion, displacement, and changes in life circumstances, many people have been left without regular social interaction and support. That is why, as part of its Long-Term Care programme, the Ukrainian Red Cross is developing a network of Active Longevity Clubs. Their main goal is to help older people remain active and socially engaged while ensuring that they feel cared for, respected, and safe.
The first clubs were established in 2018 in the Luhansk and Donetsk regions, but their activities were suspended following the full-scale invasion. In 2023, the Ukrainian Red Cross, together with partners, including other National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and local self-government authorities, resumed the clubs’ activities based on the experience gained from the earlier initiative.
Today, 143 clubs operate in almost all government-controlled regions of Ukraine. Anyone aged 60 and over can join.
Participants can take part in a range of activities, including:
- interest-based gatherings, including creative activities, cooking, and handicrafts;
- lectures, workshops, and training sessions;
- exercise sessions, yoga, and dancing;
- psychosocial support activities and events marking important dates;
- social activities that promote community cohesion and help participants make new connections;
- volunteering as a socially meaningful way to contribute to the community.
The Ukrainian Red Cross continues to expand the Active Longevity Clubs network so that older people do not experience loneliness and can enjoy active and fulfilling lives.
Around 10 more Active Longevity Clubs are planned to open in different regions of Ukraine by the end of the year. At the clubs, volunteers and community representatives bring people together around shared values, create an atmosphere of friendship and support, organise engaging activities, encourage active lifestyles, and invite others to join.
