The Ukrainian Red Cross supports people affected by attacks in Kharkiv and Zhytomyr

In Kharkiv, the Ukrainian Red Cross emergency response team has been working at the site of the strike from the first minutes, alongside the State Emergency Service of Ukraine and other emergency services.

Volunteers joined search and rescue operations, assessed affected areas and damaged buildings, helped rescue people trapped under the rubble, evacuated injured people from a damaged building, provided first aid and psychological support, and handed those affected over to medical teams. The search and rescue dog team was also involved in the operation.

A Ukrainian Red Cross support point is currently operating at the site, providing people affected by the attack with humanitarian assistance and basic building materials to support the immediate repair of damaged homes. People can also have tea or water, get a snack and receive psychological support.

According to preliminary data from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, one person was killed and at least 27 people were injured, including a child, as a result of the strike on Kharkiv’s Saltivskyi district. A 10-storey residential building was hit, destroying sections between the seventh and tenth floors and causing a fire. At another location, a three-storey warehouse building was hit and subsequently caught fire.

In the Zhytomyr region, the Ukrainian Red Cross emergency response team also worked at sites affected by the overnight attack. In coordination with other specialised emergency services, volunteers assessed the affected areas and provided first aid and psychological first aid to people experiencing acute stress reactions.

According to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, three people were injured in the attack in the Zhytomyr region: one was hospitalised with burns, while two others experienced acute stress reactions. The strike caused fires at civilian infrastructure facilities and a private enterprise, and also damaged a private residential building.
