Summer Camp Held for Winners of the All-Ukrainian International Humanitarian Law Tournaments

From 27 to 31 July, an International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Summer Camp for winners of the All-Ukrainian International Humanitarian Law Tournaments was held in the Lviv region. More than 30 students in grades 9–11 from different regions of Ukraine took part.

Over the course of five days, participants deepened their knowledge of international humanitarian law, worked in teams, and took part in practical sessions, intellectual competitions, and interactive exercises. The educational programme was delivered by Ukrainian Red Cross specialists and volunteer trainers.

During the camp, participants learned about the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, the history and fundamental principles of international humanitarian law, the application of IHL in contemporary armed conflicts, the protection of civilians and children, the legal regime of occupation, and accountability for violations of international humanitarian law. Separate learning sessions also explored the challenges posed by the use of artificial intelligence and unmanned technologies in modern armed conflicts.

A key part of the programme consisted of practical activities, including a human rights and children’s rights quiz competition and a thematic quest, during which participants applied their knowledge by solving simulated scenarios based on real-life situations governed by international humanitarian law.

At the conclusion of the camp, all participants received certificates, as well as books donated by Ihor Kozych, a Ukrainian Red Cross volunteer expert, Head of the Department of Crime Prevention Policy and Criminal Law at the Educational and Scientific Law Institute of the Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University, Doctor of Law and Professor. Thirteen of the most active participants were also recognised with certificates of merit and gifts from the Ukrainian Red Cross.

The Summer Camp formed part of the Ukrainian Red Cross’s educational initiatives aimed at promoting knowledge of international humanitarian law among young people and fostering a culture of humanity and respect for human dignity, even in the context of armed conflict.
