In the Chernihiv region, the Ukrainian Red Cross Tracing Service teaches children safe behaviour

On the occasion of the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, the Ukrainian Red Cross Tracing Service, together with the mine risk specialists, conducted an awareness-raising session for schoolchildren. Due to an air raid alert, the session was held in a school shelter in Chernihiv, in full compliance with safety procedures.

The aim of the session was to:

  • raise children’s awareness of safe behaviour, particularly in the context of mine risks;
  • build basic skills for responding if they become separated from adults.

A total of 57 preschool children (aged 3–6) and 24 education staff members took part in the session.

The children watched the animated film “How Not to Get Lost”, followed by an interactive discussion on what to do in situations when no adults are nearby.

To reinforce their learning, a game was organised where children practised how to:

  • stay calm;
  • remain in one place;
  • ask adults for help — including teachers, school staff, and police officers.

Participants also received themed colouring books, “How Not to Get Lost” and “Guardians of the Wonder World”.

The Tracing Service team is doing everything possible to ensure that even the youngest children know how to stay safe and respond appropriately in critical situations.
