The first generators from the European Union have arrived in Ukraine and will be delivered to communities by the Ukrainian Red Cross
The Ukrainian Red Cross will receive a total of 447 generators, delivered to Ukraine with support from the European Union under the EU Civil Protection Mechanism and the #rescEU strategic reserves. These generators are provided to support communities most affected by recent attacks on energy infrastructure.
In cooperation with the Ministry for Development of Communities and Territories of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Red Cross is ensuring the generators reach the communities where they are needed most. Priority assistance will be provided to Kyiv and Kyiv region, as well as Donetsk, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Sumy, Kharkiv, Kherson, and Chernihiv regions.
Illya Kletskovskyy, Deputy Director General of the Ukrainian Red Cross, emphasised:
“The Ukrainian Red Cross plays an auxiliary role to the state, particularly in the areas of civil protection and healthcare. We have now begun cooperation specifically on the supply of generators. Today, 300 generators arrived in Ukraine: 148 were delivered to Kyiv and a further 152 to Kropyvnytskyi. They will be distributed to communities in the very near future.”
“Four hundred and forty-seven generators are only a small part of our assistance and of what we are doing to help Ukraine withstand and endure attacks on energy infrastructure during freezing temperatures,” noted Katarína Mathernová, EU Ambassador to Ukraine.
The provided generators will be used to support the operation of hospitals, Points of Invincibility (resilience centres), shelters, critical and social infrastructure facilities, ensuring continuous support for people in affected communities.
“These generators will reduce the load on the power grid and supply power to essential facilities, including social infrastructure, hospitals, kindergartens and schools — precisely those places where an independent power supply is essential. They will also support the operation of water utilities in the regions. The generators will be distributed among frontline communities,” said Maryna Denysiuk, Deputy Minister for Development of Communities and Territories of Ukraine.
For the Ukrainian Red Cross, this support is a crucial part of its daily work in responding to the impacts of the war. In close collaboration with international partners, the organisation continues to strengthen community resilience and support people in the most challenging conditions.
