In Ivano-Frankivsk, the Ukrainian Red Cross participated in a conference on the development of nursing standards

Last Friday, a large-scale conference titled “The Nurse in a Specialist Institution: Nursing Standards and Professional Development” took place at King Danylo University, with around 6,000 participants attending. The event was organised by the Association of Cardiovascular Surgeons of Ukraine, in cooperation with the National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery named after M. M. Amosov of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, the State Agency “Centre for Nursing Development of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine,” and the Kyiv City Trade Union of Healthcare Workers.

One of the Ukrainian Red Cross’s key areas of work is advocacy for the advancement of nursing, particularly supporting initiatives aimed at developing modern professional standards for nursing specialists. The draft standards are designed to regulate and standardise the provision of nursing care, set clear requirements for education and skills, and adapt European and international standards into the Ukrainian healthcare system.

During the conference, Hanna Hlushchenko, Lead Specialist for Nursing Development Cooperation at the Ukrainian Red Cross, delivered a presentation titled “How a Standard is Born: Methodology for Developing Professional Nursing Standards.” She also chaired a panel discussion called “From Idea to Practice: The Relevance and Future of Professional Nursing Standards.” The panel addressed key issues such as the formation and differentiation of competencies in regulatory documents, the implementation of international experience in healthcare provision in Ukraine, the integration of digital skills into nurses’ daily work, and how recent research will shape the future of the profession.

The Ukrainian Red Cross supports the regulatory transformation of nursing in Ukraine and has established its own modern educational institution this year — the Ukrainian Red Cross Vocational College — which aims to train a new generation of healthcare professionals.

The programme offers several advantages, including admission without the national multi-subject test (NMT), education options after 9th or 11th grade, support for vulnerable groups, accommodation in Kyiv, international internships, and a presidential scholarship.

Applications are open until 20 October 2025.
