Life-saving skills: Since the start of the full-scale war, the Ukrainian Red Cross has trained 365,000 people in first aid

With the war affecting every region of Ukraine, first aid has become an essential skill for everyone. In emergencies, it is often those nearby who are the first to save lives before the ambulance arrives.

The Ukrainian Red Cross is a leading organisation in Ukraine, teaching first aid for over 100 years. The training programme is certified and meets the current standards of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, incorporating recommendations from ILCOR (International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation). Since 24 February 2022, more than 365,000 people across the country have completed the training.

“It doesn’t matter what your profession is — teacher, driver, student or pensioner. All our courses are designed to build confidence in people: I will be able to help. And that’s the most important thing,” says Nadiia Yamnenko, master trainer in first aid at the Ukrainian Red Cross. “We teach in a simple, accessible way, through practice and simulations — because help must be quick and clear.”

Over 60% of the programme is practical: participants practise responding to simulated life-threatening situations, ranging from severe bleeding to loss of consciousness and stroke.

Special attention is given to inclusivity — the training courses are adapted for people with disabilities, and new methods are being developed to enable participants not only to learn but also to teach others.

“We don’t know when or where a critical situation may occur. But one thing is certain: the more people who know how to provide first aid, the more lives will be saved,” emphasises Nadiia Yamnenko.

First aid is a vital skill for everyone.
