The Ukrainian Red Cross participated in the panel discussion “International Assistance: How Humanitarian Organisations Change Lives Through Housing,” where it presented its key steps in providing housing for internally displaced persons and rebuilding healthcare facilities

The event, held in Kyiv, aimed to align the efforts of the state, international organisations, local authorities, and civil society in finding effective and sustainable housing solutions for people affected by the armed aggression of the Russian Federation.

The forum served as a platform to discuss:

  • Effective models of support for IDPs and those who have lost their homes
  • New partnerships and joint initiatives
  • Practical case studies from international humanitarian organisations
  • National and local programmes for restoring housing infrastructure

During the discussion, Illya Kletskovskyy, Deputy Director General of the Ukrainian Red Cross, outlined the organisation’s key steps in providing housing for internally displaced persons (IDPs) and in rebuilding medical facilities.

Among the initiatives implemented:

  • The Unbroken Mothers Centre in Lviv (2022):

Over 1,300 m² of space, providing accommodation for over 100 pregnant women and mothers with children. The project was nominated for the prestigious EU Prize for Contemporary Architecture — Mies van der Rohe Award 2024.

  • Modular Housing Community in Chernihiv (2023):

Seven two-storey buildings, 112 furnished apartments, providing housing for more than 300 people.

  • Modular Housing Community in partnership with the Italian Red Cross (2024):

56 fully equipped modular houses, accommodating over 200 people.

  • Ongoing regional housing construction projects:

Sumy: A transit shelter with two modular buildings (32 apartments); four more buildings are planned.

Zakarpattia: Two buildings for IDPs from the Luhansk region, accommodating around 100 people.

Chernivtsi region: 20 houses for 60 IDPs, and three family-type homes for children.

In addition, support is provided for medical infrastructure:

Reconstruction of the rehabilitation centre in Lviv:

  • Together with partners, a former polyclinic was modernised into a seven-storey rehabilitation centre, serving 10,000 patients annually.

Plans for further reconstruction of the centre in Briukhovychi:

  • Construction of the third floor and two additional buildings is underway.

Over 100 medical facilities have been restored, including the Centre for Paediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, which was damaged in July 2024.

The Ukrainian Red Cross has invested nearly €30 million in housing support, medical care, and dignified living conditions for citizens.

We continue to support Ukrainians and expand our activities in housing, healthcare, and social assistance.

We sincerely thank our trusted partners, including the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Italian Red Cross, Canadian Red Cross, British Red Cross, Luxembourg Red Cross and others, for their continued support for Ukraine.
