On 8 July 2024, a large-scale missile attack on Kyiv severely damaged the Okhmatdyt National Children’s Specialised Hospital and the Centre for Paediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery, both under the Ministry of Health of Ukraine

In the immediate aftermath, Ukrainian Red Cross volunteers joined the emergency response: evacuating children, including patients with spinal injuries and those on mechanical ventilation; providing first aid to the injured; setting up an aid station for rescue teams; and assisting with debris removal.

The damaged Centre for Paediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery is currently undergoing restoration. The Ukrainian Red Cross is leading the work, in coordination with the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and international partners, including the Austrian Red Cross, Canadian Red Cross, and Swedish Red Cross.

Repairs to the roof and replacement of damaged windows have been completed, along with restoration work on the lower ground, fourth, and fifth floors. Renovation of the first, second, and third floors is currently underway. All work is expected to be completed by early autumn.

The Ukrainian Red Cross continues to support healthcare facilities to ensure that patients have uninterrupted access to medical services during the ongoing war.
