Participation in a forum on the challenges and effective practices of informing the public about the risks posed by mines and explosive ordnance
Last week, Svitlana Avramenko, Head of the Humanitarian Access and Protection Department at the Ukrainian Red Cross, took part in a forum addressing the challenges and effective methods of informing the public about the risks posed by mines and explosive ordnance.
The event brought together representatives from relevant ministries, mine action operators, and other key institutions who work daily to ensure that Ukrainians — especially children, the elderly, internally displaced persons, and residents of affected areas — know how to protect themselves.
Discussions focused on strategies to deliver critical information to vulnerable populations. Tools explored included visual materials, interactive formats, engagement with opinion leaders, and digital platforms.
“Mine safety is not just about preventing tragedies. It is about restoring confidence in living in a community where people can safely live, work, and raise their children. That’s why cooperation between government agencies, humanitarian organisations, and communities is key to our shared success,” said Svitlana Avramenko.
Particular attention was given to the creation of a communication hub for mine action actors — a platform that will enable them to coordinate efforts, share experiences, and build a unified information system from the national to the local level.
The Ukrainian Red Cross continues to work actively to create a safe information environment — in communities, schools, and both online and offline.
