«Change comes when it is needed most” — Halyna, a participant in the Reboot programme
Before the full-scale war, Halyna lived a typical family life in Kyiv. She is a mother of three children, one of whom has a disability. While raising her youngest child, then only five months old, she worked part-time as a foreign language teacher. Her dreams of a cosy home and a large family were suddenly disrupted: at the outset of the war, the family was forced to evacuate to Ternopil, initially ‘just for a few days’, or so it seemed at the time.
However, a new life in another city gradually became part of their daily routine. In order to manage the family’s needs and transport her children, Halyna needed to drive with confidence. She already held a category B driving licence but felt the need to expand her capabilities, and it was at this point that she discovered the Reboot programme.
The project, implemented in the Ternopil region by the Ukrainian Red Cross with support from the Spanish Red Cross and the Swiss Red Cross, opened up new opportunities. Thanks to the training she received through the programme, Halyna successfully passed her practical exam and recently obtained her category C driving licence.
She can now drive larger vehicles, which gives her greater confidence and broadens her possibilities. Although her journey has been far from easy, Halyna is convinced that change comes when it is needed most.
