In the Cherkasy region, the Ukrainian Red Cross took part in the ‘Fighters of the Spirit’ sports festival — a symbol of resilience, support and new beginnings

The festival for veterans, titled ‘Fighters of the Spirit’, was held at the City Sports Complex ‘Dnipro’ in Cherkasy. Its main aim was to promote physical activity, mental wellbeing, and social integration among veterans.

For over seven hours, veterans competed in a variety of sports, including Nordic walking, echo bike, rowing, kettlebell lifting, archery and table tennis. Young footballers also joined the event, notably participants from the Mayor’s Cup children’s festival. For the children, it was a genuine opportunity to meet inspiring examples of courage and strength of spirit.

The Cherkasy regional and city branches of the Ukrainian Red Cross actively supported the festival by:

  • Presenting the Reboot programme — designed to help veterans restore their wellbeing and adapt to everyday life.
  • Running first aid workshops — covering cardiopulmonary resuscitation, response to loss of consciousness, airway obstruction, and other critical situations.
  • Organising information sessions on mine risk — teaching how to recognise explosive devices and stay safe.
  • Setting up a psychosocial support space for children to help reduce anxiety through drawing and creative activities.
  • Showcasing special equipment and evacuation vehicles, while the Ukrainian Red Cross emergency response team also spoke about the vital role volunteers play in transporting people with limited mobility.

It was a day when veterans once again demonstrated that true strength lies in the heart, character, and mutual support. We stand with those who defend, inspire and give hope.
