The Ukrainian Red Cross expands its mine action efforts
In the context of the ongoing war, Ukraine is facing an unprecedented level of mine contamination. Tripwires, landmines, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) can pose a threat for many years after hostilities have ended. While raising awareness about the risks of explosive hazards and promoting safer behaviour is a crucial first step, the next vital stage is the non-technical survey (NTS) of affected areas.
A non-technical survey involves systematic engagement with communities to identify potentially hazardous areas without the use of technical detection equipment. Specialists gather and analyse information from local residents, visible signs on the ground, and conflict-related data to determine areas at risk.
With support from the Italian Red Cross and the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), mine risk specialists are currently undertaking specialised training in NTS. This knowledge will soon be applied across 19 regions of Ukraine.
We are working towards a future where every community is equipped to act safely and confidently in the face of danger.
We stand by those in need.
