Over 150 Libraries in Ukraine Receive Books on International Humanitarian Law from the Ukrainian Red Cross
On 12 May in Kyiv, more than 150 libraries from across Ukraine received sets of literature on International Humanitarian Law (IHL), marking the launch of the nationwide campaign “Books on International Humanitarian Law for Ukrainian Libraries”, initiated by the Ukrainian Red Cross. The National Library of Ukraine named after Yaroslav the Wise and the Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine are partners in the project.
The donated collection includes eight books and two thematic information booklets. These publications cover key topics such as the history and core principles of IHL, the legal regulation of armed conflict, the protection of civilians, and the use and safeguarding of Red Cross emblems.
Mykola Polishchuk, President of the Ukrainian Red Cross, stated:
“The literature donated by the Ukrainian Red Cross to libraries includes unique books and supplementary materials that offer readers a comprehensive understanding of the history of international humanitarian law, its sources, principles, and its practical application during war. Without a doubt, this contribution will significantly enrich Ukrainian library collections and help make this vital knowledge more accessible to the public.”
The launch of this large-scale initiative by the Ukrainian Red Cross aims to promote awareness of this essential branch of public international law and make it widely available to citizens across the country. The nationwide campaign is being implemented in two stages. The first stage began on 12 May 2025 with the distribution of literature sets to library representatives. During the second stage, additional copies will be transferred to the exchange and reserve fund of the National Library of Ukraine named after Yaroslav the Wise for further distribution to libraries throughout the country.
The initiative has received widespread support from libraries across Ukraine. As a result, library users will soon have access to up-to-date resources on international humanitarian law — a crucial step in fostering public understanding of the rules that govern armed conflict. Promoting awareness of IHL plays an important role in building an informed civil society within a democratic state.
