We continue to raise awareness about mine risks in the Sumy region

The Sumy region faces daily shelling, which puts civilians at constant risk. Remnants of explosive devices can be found not only in fields and forests but also near schools, roads, and residential areas. That’s why it is vital to educate the public — including children — on how to respond to such threats.

For younger audiences, it is especially important that this information is delivered in an engaging and accessible way. With this in mind, mine risk specialists from the Ukrainian Red Cross took a creative approach by preparing a performance titled “Mine Risk: Performances That Save Lives.”

The premiere took place at the Okhtyrka Central Library. The first viewers were primary school pupils from Secondary Schools No. 4 and No. 11.

“This is a pilot project that began in our region with the support of the Danish Red Cross. I’m very grateful to the team at the Okhtyrka branch of the Ukrainian Red Cross — the authors of the project — and to the active young people who created this puppet play. I also thank the branch leadership for supporting the initiative and ensuring its successful implementation,” said Olena Stryzhak, coordinator of the Mine Risk Project at the Ukrainian Red Cross in the Sumy region.

Through this performance, we are once again reminding children of the life-saving steps to follow if an explosive device is discovered:

  • Stop
  • Stay calm — don’t panic
  • Do not touch
  • Tell an adult
  • Call 101 or 102
