Forum “Mental Health and Psychosocial Support in the Ukrainian Red Cross: Integration. Growth. Resilience” Marks the 10th Anniversary of the Initiative’s Development
On 8-9 April, a forum was held in the Ivano-Frankivsk region to mark the 10th anniversary of the development of mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) within the Ukrainian Red Cross.
The event was attended by representatives from regional branches and the National Committee, as well as delegates from partner international Red Cross organisations. The forum brought together those who were at the forefront of this initiative, helped develop it locally, integrated it into crisis response, and continued to support those going through difficult life circumstances every day.
“The need for psychological support is growing, and at the same time, trust in us — as specialists who don’t just respond to crises but work with people holistically, with respect, empathy, and patience — is also increasing. Throughout the years of full-scale war, nearly 1 million people received psychosocial support from the volunteers and staff of the Ukrainian Red Cross. This is a significant number, but it is crucial for us to continue being there for those who are struggling,” said Maksym Dotsenko, Director General of the Ukrainian Red Cross.
Over the course of two days, participants engaged in presentations, panel discussions, workshops, breakout sessions, and group discussions. During the event, they had the opportunity to not only share their experiences but also to discuss the needs of the population, the role of volunteers, international partnerships, and institutional development.
Special attention was given to the team’s achievements, including those of regional branches, as well as to the real stories of those who have benefited from assistance, reminding us of who we are working for and why.
The 10th anniversary of MHPSS is not only a reflection of our experience but also a testament to our resilience, teamwork, mutual support, and the journey we have travelled together.
“In the coming months, we will work together to identify the needs and strategic development of the area. During this time, we will focus on four key components: understanding needs from local to national levels, integrating the area, ensuring the sustainability of services, and providing support and supervision for teams. We will do this work together because, without collaboration, it would be meaningless. We will certainly revisit these issues, as the only way to achieve success is by working together,” stated Kateryna Kryklia, Head of the MHPSS Unit at the Ukrainian Red Cross.
We are grateful to each and every one of those who have been involved, supported, and helped develop this initiative over the years. We continue to support those who need it most!
The forum was organised with the support of the European Commission under the EU4Health programme.
