The National Guard, with the support of the Ukrainian Red Cross, presented the Handbook on IHL

The Main Directorate of the National Guard of Ukraine (NGU) has developed the Handbook on the Application of International Humanitarian Law for NGU Servicemen, which was printed and presented with the support of the Ukrainian Red Cross. The event was attended by heads of structural units of the National Guard, representatives from the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine, officers from combat units, and members of civil society. The presentation took place on 26 February 2025 in Kyiv.

In fulfilment of its mission to promote knowledge of international humanitarian law (IHL) and assist state authorities in implementing its principles, the Ukrainian Red Cross supported the project and contributed to the publication of the Handbook. In addition to organising the launch event, Ukrainian Red Cross IHL experts contributed to the development of several sections of the book. Notably, they worked on the chapter about the Red Cross symbols, explaining the meaning of the emblem and the importance of respecting it and those it protects in an accessible manner. The section on the Ukrainian Red Cross Society offers insight into the largest Ukrainian humanitarian organisation and its activities.

The developers of the Handbook highlighted that it is written in simple language and illustrated with unique artwork by artist Ivan Semesiuk. It includes practical recommendations for military personnel, guidance on how to treat civilians and prisoners of war, and specific advice on how to act in various combat situations. The publication of this book has become a key tool in ensuring compliance with international humanitarian law, while also serving as a testament to the National Guard of Ukraine’s commitment to upholding international law.

The Ukrainian Red Cross continues to support Ukraine’s defence forces by helping implement key initiatives in the field of international humanitarian law aimed at protecting the victims of war. в війни.
