The Impact Is Visible: The Work of Mobile Rehabilitation Units

“The home stage of rehabilitation, that is when a person is staying at home — we are responsible for it,” stated Oleh Moskalenko, regional coordinator of the Ukrainian Red Cross mobile rehabilitation units in the Khmelnytskyi region.

The Ukrainian Red Cross mobile rehabilitation units regularly provide assistance to individuals who need to restore lost motor functions, improve physical activity, and enhance emotional well-being. Currently, they operate in eight regions of Ukraine, working directly within communities — either at people’s homes or in specially equipped spaces.

“Some people do not have the opportunity to continue rehabilitation after being discharged from hospital. I’m referring to those who are isolated and have no means to get to an outpatient clinic or afford a companion for support. It is precisely for these individuals that we provide the ‘at home’ service,” said Oleh Moskalenko.

The purpose of the mobile rehabilitation units is to offer social rehabilitation services and raise awareness among the Ukrainian population about evidence-based methods, adaptation, and integration into society. The number of visits and routes is determined based on the needs of the local communities.

The team consists of rehabilitation specialists who have been trained at designated clinical sites, undergone psychological first aid training, and received specialised training from the World Health Organization (WHO) and other organisations operating in Ukraine. The service not only involves accompanying individuals but also includes training for them, as well as their family members, carers, and guardians. This training covers the use of rehabilitation aids, effective communication, and the care of people with disabilities, helping them feel fully integrated into society.

Rehabilitation plays a crucial role in improving the quality of life for people with disabilities, fostering their social adaptation, and ensuring equal opportunities. This is why the Ukrainian Red Cross strives to enhance access to rehabilitation services and complement existing community-based services.

The Norwegian Red Cross supports the activities of the mobile rehabilitation units in the Khmelnytskyi region.
