Starting this year, Ukrainian Red Cross mobile rehabilitation units will operate in 13 regions

In 2025, the Ukrainian Red Cross mobile rehabilitation units (MRUs) will begin operating in five more regions: Ternopil, Chernihiv, Odesa, Kharkiv, and Zaporizhzhia. This will enable us to bring quality rehabilitation services closer to those who need them most.

What are mobile rehabilitation units?

MRUs are professional teams of physiotherapists and physiotherapy assistants who provide physical rehabilitation services to people needing to restore lost motor functions, improve physical activity, and enhance emotional well-being after traumatic brain injuries, fractures, strokes, surgeries, and other conditions.

All services are delivered at the beneficiary’s home or in specially equipped centres, such as the one in Mykolaiv.

How do mobile rehabilitation units work?

During a visit, specialists:

  • assess a person’s physical condition and develop an individual rehabilitation programme;
  • conduct rehabilitation sessions based on the recovery plan;
  • provide rehabilitation aids (walking frames, canes, crutches, wheelchairs, etc.);
  • assess living conditions and offer recommendations for improvement;
  • provide psychosocial counselling for emotional support.

Where do MRUs operate now?

Currently, mobile rehabilitation units are operating in 8 regions: Lviv, Volyn, Rivne, Khmelnytskyi, Ivano-Frankivsk, Mykolaiv, Poltava, and Dnipro.

How to access services?

Rehabilitation services can be obtained through a referral from:

  • a hospital, social service, or family doctor;
  • staff of the Home-Based Care programme or mobile health units;
  • volunteers from the BraVo and other programmes.

You can also apply independently. To access rehabilitation services, call the Ukrainian Red Cross national hotline: 0 800 332 656.

Mobile rehabilitation units not only provide physical support but also offer vital emotional support, helping people return to an active life.
