International Day of Persons with Disabilities
Despite various differences—whether gender, religion, political views, diseases, injuries, or their consequences—a person remains a person, with life being the highest value. Today, as we fight against the aggressor and our defenders protect us, we simultaneously work to build an open, tolerant society, free from barriers, and founded on respect and dignity for all.
Since its inception, the Ukrainian Red Cross has been guided by the 7 Fundamental Principles, including humanity and impartiality. This means that we have always supported, and will continue to support, people regardless of their differences.
We provide:
- Free access to our services – Ukrainian Red Cross offices are equipped with ramps, wide corridors, and other accessible features.
- Integration of people with disabilities into our activities – Among our volunteers and staff, there are people with disabilities who perform their roles excellently to help others.
- Access to rental mobility equipment – In various districts, there are rental points for rehabilitation and mobility equipment (such as crutches, canes, and wheelchairs), allowing people to reduce the cost of purchasing mobility aids and move freely.
- Psychological support – We offer psychosocial support activities where people with disabilities can feel a sense of belonging to the community and receive emotional support.
- Comfort – In some organisations, volunteers sew adaptive clothing for people with disabilities, making it easier for their carers to assist them.
- Access to training – We offer adapted first aid training programmes for people with visual, hearing, or other disabilities.
- Humanitarian aid – We provide essential aid to those in need.
- Access to timely medical care – Specialists from mobile health units can examine individuals at home, and if necessary, emergency response teams can transport them to the nearest hospital in specially equipped vehicles.
People with disabilities enjoy the same benefits as other vulnerable groups within Ukrainian Red Cross organisations.
Today, as the world celebrates the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we once again want to highlight the importance of ensuring the full integration of people with disabilities into all aspects of life: political, social, economic, and cultural. This integration begins with us—our attitudes, communication, support, and assistance. After all, we can only build society together. So, let’s build it with equal opportunities for everyone! Let’s unite, not divide.
