The Ukrainian Red Cross, with support from partners and the Ministry of Health, has initiated work to restore the Paediatric Cardiology Centre in Kyiv

The Ukrainian Red Cross team, in collaboration with partners from the International Red Cross Movement, is restoring the children’s ward of the State Institution “Scientific and Practical Medical Centre for Paediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine” in Kyiv. As reported earlier, the building was damaged on 8 July 2024 in a massive missile attack on Kyiv and Okhmatdyt—the National Children’s Specialised Hospital. The total cost of the restoration project is UAH 42 million.

“Restoring medical facilities in Ukraine that have been affected by the war is a priority for our organisation, particularly when it comes to children’s healthcare. The damage to the Paediatric Cardiology Centre has made it impossible to provide care for thousands of young patients. The Ukrainian Red Cross is doing everything possible to ensure the speedy restoration of the centre, where children’s lives are saved every day,” stated Maksym Dotsenko, Director General of the Ukrainian Red Cross.

“The Centre for Paediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery is one of the leading medical institutions in Ukraine, where unique surgeries are performed to save the lives of the youngest patients with the most complex heart conditions. Following the tragic Russian missile attack, which caused severe damage, we are faced with the important task of restoring the Centre’s facilities, ensuring that doctors have the necessary resources to provide care and that children have access to the most modern medical services. The recovery of the hospital involves not only rebuilding the facility but also restoring hope for many families whose children urgently need treatment. I am deeply grateful to the partners who are supporting us in this effort,” said Viktor Liashko, Minister of Health of Ukraine.

“It is important to note that we aim to resume heart surgery for newborns and infants in the renovated building by the summer of 2025. This is our priority, as every day is crucial for those who need our help. We are grateful to everyone who supports us during this challenging time and hope to resume our work as soon as possible,” stated Illya Yemets, Director of the Paediatric Cardiology Centre.

In particular, to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the facility, the following actions are planned:

  • Install new partitions in the hospital building.
  • Repair all damaged windows and doors.
  • Repair the damaged components of the electrical and plumbing systems.
  • Repair walls and renovate the interiors of affected areas in the hospital.
  • Replace damaged flooring.
  • Install new shower facilities.
  • Repair damaged sections of the facade.
  • Replace damaged sections of the roof.

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the Ukrainian Red Cross has been actively involved in the restoration of medical facilities. To date, 10,000 m² of medical and rehabilitation facilities have been repaired across the country. In particular, the Unbroken Rehabilitation Centre in Lviv and the State Rehabilitation Institution “All-Ukrainian Centre for Comprehensive Rehabilitation for Persons with Disabilities” in Liutizh, Kyiv region, have already been restored. Additionally, solar panels have been installed at Vyshneve City Hospital in the Kyiv region. This hospital serves over 120,000 people, including thousands of internally displaced persons, and with the new equipment, it will be able to operate even during emergency power outages.
