MOBILE HEALTH UNIT
The Ukrainian Red Cross Mobile Health Units are mobile medical teams that support healthcare facilities by providing access to quality primary healthcare for people affected by war and other humanitarian challenges. These units deliver essential medical assistance in areas where access to healthcare is limited or non-existent, reaching some of the most remote regions of Ukraine.
Their primary role is to strengthen local healthcare systems by delivering essential medical services to communities in hard-to-reach areas and to internally displaced persons affected by hostilities.

The Mobile Health Units were established in 2015 to provide primary healthcare to people living in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, which were most affected by the war and had limited access to medical services. Following the outbreak of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the Ukrainian Red Cross, in cooperation with international partners, swiftly deployed over 120 mobile health units across the country.

The Mobile Health Unit teams consist of family doctors, paramedics, nurses, and drivers from primary healthcare centres (PHCs). The schedules and routes are organised by the heads of PHCs according to the current needs of the communities. The heads of amalgamated territorial communities and village councils inform residents in advance about the date and time of the mobile health unit’s next visit.
Visits usually take place several times a week, although the schedule can vary depending on the region and district. In each community, the teams provide care to everyone in need, offering consultations and general health check-ups.
People are seen either at rural health posts, other temporary facilities, or sometimes directly inside the mobile units when no other options are available.
The Ukrainian Red Cross Mobile Health Units are not part of the regular healthcare system. Their purpose is to provide temporary emergency support to the state by strengthening primary healthcare services and delivering medical care to local communities, including those affected by the war in Ukraine.
This work is made possible thanks to the support of our international partners: the Austrian, British, French, Swedish, German, Japanese, Norwegian, Danish, Italian, and Canadian Red Cross Societies.
