Ukrainian Red Cross Community Center Officially Opens in Korosten
Despite the attack and the ongoing response to its consequences, a new Ukrainian Red Cross Community Center has opened in Korosten — a space where support is closer to people and assistance is more accessible to everyone.
The opening ceremony was attended by representatives of the Ukrainian Red Cross leadership, the Zhytomyr regional branch, public authorities, as well as partners and donors who supported the launch of the Center. Among them was the Head of Delegation of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, whose support made it possible for the Center to open its doors to the community.
“The Community Center is a space that brings together the Ukrainian Red Cross, its programmes and services, as well as initiatives from other civil society organisations, businesses, and the community itself. Its aim is to bring support together in one place and make it more accessible to people.
This is a place where anyone can turn with any request or problem, even if it does not fall within the areas of work of the Ukrainian Red Cross.
Community Centers are designed to introduce a new model of engagement with communities in Ukraine — one that is more open, coordinated, and people-centred, helping to respond more effectively to people’s needs and support community development,” said Olena Stokoz, Deputy Director General for Organisational Development and Resource Mobilisation.
The Center is an open and accessible space for community members, offering a range of services to respond to people’s needs. Here, people can receive social, practical, and psychosocial support, as well as take part in educational and awareness-raising activities.
Services available at the Korosten Community Center include:
- Social counselling — guidance on available services and support programmes
- Psychosocial support activities, including for children
- First aid training and mine risk awareness sessions
- Group activities — a space for communication and mutual support
In addition, the Center provides access to a clothing bank, a social hairdressing service, laundry and shower facilities, humanitarian assistance, massage services, and rehabilitation equipment for temporary use. Home-based care social assistants are also available at the Center.
