When silence speaks louder than words

When silence speaks louder than words

Oleksandr is 88. His life is a story of strength and responsibility: a retired worker and a first-category Chornobyl disaster responder. He once protected others from danger. Today, he needs support himself.

For a long time, his days passed in silence. His home gradually shrank to a few rooms, and everyday tasks became difficult. Cooking, going to the store, looking after himself — all required effort that wasn’t always possible.

But the hardest part was not that.
The hardest part was loneliness.

When Oleksandr joined the Ukrainian Red Cross Home-Based Care programme, he gained more than practical support — he found companionship.

Now he has someone by his side who:

  • helps with daily tasks and household chores
  • ensures proper nutrition
  • provides conversation and genuine attention

“I feel needed again,” says Oleksandr.

Sometimes care isn’t about grand gestures.
It’s about being there, giving attention, and simply saying, “I’m here.”

We cannot change the past or stop time.
But we can make today warmer for those who need it most.
